Zoom in With an SLR Zoom Lens

By James E. Tutten

If you are a photographer, you're probably aware, and know the importance as well as the benefits, of a zoom lens for your DSLR. Because of its narrow angle of view, a telephoto lens is definitely not going to be like a zoom lens.

However, zoom lenses offer both a wide-angle or telephoto - giving you a wide angle or narrow view, respectively. Your personal collection of lenses should always include a SLR zoom lens, as it can zoom in on your subject as it's name suggests.

You can get these it can vary from focal lengths of 16mm to up to 400mm. While it has the ability to bring your subject closer to you, these lenses can also be used to change the background of a particular subject. With a longer focal length, your camera now has the ability to separate the subject by blurring its background, resulting in a smooth bokeh that surrounds your subject. Your subject now stands out better.

For sports photographers who are serious about getting action photos, then this lens is also a must. This will allow you to zoom in on your athletes without having to move from your place. Animal photographers, as well, should have SLR zoom lens. The long focal length means more magnification level for your photos, thus making your subjects bigger and more prominent without the need to move in closer.

Event photographers will also benefit by using this zoom lens. If their subject is a person, they can zoom in on them while being able to maintain a complete wide angle view of the entire event. A good photographer will be able to use the versatility of these lenses in a variety of ways. High-quality SLR zoom lenses are produced by Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus in various focal lengths.

To find the magnification level of a certain lens, all you have to do is divide the largest number by the lowest. A Canon EF 28-300mm with a 10.7x magnification level is an example. Keep in mind that having a top-of-the-line digital SLR camera and great zoom lens, but you don't have a photographer's eye or know how to use it, you won't get the pictures you want.

However, take the time to read, practice, and listen to your instincts, and you'll capture memorable pictures to be proud of.
