The Beatles Second UK LP: With The Beatles

By Harold Donald Quesenberry

With The Beatles (1963) is not among my favorite Beatles albums, in fact it's arguably their least good non Yellow Submarine LP. That is not to say I don't love hearing this early album in it's 2009 fabulous remastered format nor is it to say that this album doesn't have any groovy tracks on it because because I definitely do and it definitely does.

But I do think that when looking at only the 8 original songs on the LP, it's arguably the worst selection of originals The Beatles ever put out on an album (the underrated Beatles For Sale has a much better selection of eight original songs) on the other hand, the covers on this album are pretty good (better than the six covers on Beatles For Sale.)

My favorite originals to listen to on the With The Beatles Remastered CDs are the first three songs. Particularly, I've been loving track number two, "All I've Got To Do" in mono. It sounds delicious.

Another original song that has really been growing on me a bit is song #9, "Hold Me Tight." McCartney wrote and sang lead on this song and he's been very dismissive of it. And while the song is a bit sloppy sounding, I think it is a good time.

Among the cover songs I think "Till There Was You" is my favorite. It's an extremely sickly sweet love song and while I feel I shouldn't like it, I do anyway. The album closer, "Money" is an excellent way to end the record. When I listen closely to the versions of this song included in remastered box sets I realize that the song rocks much harder than I ever realized.

In general I prefer the stereo versions (particularly with the mid to late 60s albums) when it comes to the 2009 Beatles remasters but I do think that this particular album sounds a bit better in mono than in stereo.
